Australian singer-songwriter-guitarist Peter Freebairn unleashes a catchy new single ‘I Got Lucky (I Got You)’ today. The new track from his forthcoming debut solo album ‘Silhouettes and Cigarettes’, is a retro, guitar-driven slice of infectious radio-friendly power-pop bliss!
Freebairn explains: “This song came to me pretty quickly while I was driving the Surf Coast heading for Torquay in Victoria. I was trying to evoke the feeling of summer, sitting on a beach and turning the radio up loud. I think it’s a pretty cool road track too.”
‘I Got Lucky (I Got You)’ plays homage to the likes of American power-pop masters Matthew Sweet and Jellyfish. “I was heavily influenced by Matthew Sweet and Jellyfish in the early 90s. I loved the way they blended 60s style melodic classic rock and XTC-style power pop” – recalls Freebairn.
A master in the studio with a strong sense of the sounds he wanted to get, Freebairn played guitars and bass. He brought in his former Radio Vertigo band mates Paul Boyle to play drums and Jo George, who contributed keys and harmony vocals on the track. Freebairn comments: “It was great to reunite with Paul and Jo in the studio. They’re both extremely gifted musicians who instinctively know how to embellish the feel of a particular song.”
Boyle and George join Freebairn’s backing band when he hits the road to promote his new release.
‘Silhouettes and Cigarettes’ is Freebairn’s first body of recorded work since the release of his well-received self-titled EP in 2019.
Late in 2023, Freebairn signed to independent Melbourne record label Pop Preservation Society. The label will release new single, ‘I Got Lucky (I Got You)’ Friday 16th February and album, ‘Silhouettes and Cigarettes’ is scheduled for release in April 2024.
Freebairn and his band will perform live at music venue George Lane St Kilda with special guests Michael Meeking and Victor Stranges Saturday 17th February.
